The X11 installer is not one of the defaults. When installing
Panther, one of the last dialog before the installer starts has a
"Customize" button.
Click on the customize button and select X11. I am not sure but you
may have to run the Xcode installer after installing X11 to get the
X11 sdk etc.
You can put in CD 3 and navigate to the Packages directory. Here you
will find X11 1.0 and can install and upgrade the old one with no problems.
I completely forgot to hit the Customize option when I installed it last
friday but just went and did that last night and it seems to have worked
fine.
Of course getting Fink to keep working was a bit of a chore.
And yes, the X11 SDK is on the XCode cd and can also be installed by
itself in the same way.
Whats nice is Fink no longer needs an xfree86 package installed.
It will automatically detect your Apple X11 nowadays in the newer
versions of Fink.
