I posted a C & P observation re Panther and X11 last night (see the
archives), essentially saying that sometimes it doesn't work between
X11 apps. Today I was unable to C & P between OS X aops (Mail and
Safari), so perhaps it's not particular to X11. This was using mouse
buttons 1 and 2. However, option click still pasted properly.
But so far no one has chimed in with a "me too", so I don't know what
to say.

Okay, here is your "me too." ;-)
My middle mouse button (paste) stopped working in X11, and left me in
quite a conundrum. It seems mouse related to me, as usually the
middle mouse button opens a link in a new tab in Safari. Except it
didn't work there either; I had to use the cmd- modifier to get the
links to open in new tabs.
I really did not spend much time troubleshooting, though. I rebooted
my panther and all was well. The only hint was a *huge* list of
errors in the windowserver.log (in /var/log) file.
Good, thanks for the confirmation, although it appears to be more of a
Panther problem. Another thing to note (which I omitted to keep the
original problem report simple) is that data copied with B1 and that
would not paste, sometimes spontaneously appears - minutes later - in
some other (random?) window.
One thing I mean to do when the problem re-occurs, is to do a FUS and
see if the new user also "sees" the problem.
OK, I'm back to pointing the Finger at X11 and/or Expose. Copy/Paste
using B1/B2 failed minutes after a restart this morning (for security
update and to install OpenAFS). So I did a fast-user-switch to another
account and copy/paste using buttons worked correctly.
I switched to the original account and verified that copy/paste with
b1/b2 still failed, but worked using the keyboard. I had one xterm
open at the time, invoked via .xinitrc like this:
(hmm, can't paste it now!)
Anyway, it's a straight forward call. So I did an Application/Terminal
to open another xterm to test copy/paste there, but I was unable to
gain focus - everything continued to goto the first window even though
I was typing over the second. If I tried to grab the title bar and move
the second xterm, the first moved instead!
I should add I'm using two monitors on a dual 2 GHz G5, main monitor 20
" Apple Cinema, right monitor Apple 15" Studio, and a Kensington
PocketMouse Pro. I never saw this under Jaguar and X11 beta 3, although
that was a single 17" Apple Studio display and 450 MHz Cube
configuration.
