Maybe this is a topic that was discussed before but I use an
application that since X11 beta 3 has difficulty displaying the right
colors.
From the programmer's web site:
------
Also: More changes for Mac OS-X compile and compatibility. Possible
problems have been seen with recent OS-X revisions which have
apparently enabled 8-bit
overlays, but may have different values for reserved portions of the
colormap. A temporary fix is to set the shell environment variable
"MAGIC_COLOR" to "24bit"
to force 24-bit mode, or to set "X_COLORMAP_BASE" and
"X_COLORMAP_RESERVED" appropriately, probably to 0 and 2, respectively
(this is a guess).
------
Maybe someone knows what is the source of this problem? Of course I
tried to change the colormap base and reserved settings and it does not
work (the programmer relies on Mac user feedback for patches since he
programs on linux and does not have access to a mac).
Changing to 24 bits works for me but still, when the application is
compiled with its tcl/tk wrapper, different parts of the windows uses
different colormaps this mixes up some of the colors. (The programmer
did suspect that some parts of the windows does not have their colormap
assigned correctly). The programmer does not see this problem on other
Unix platforms. And this problem appeared only when I upgraded to X11
beta 3.
Does anyone have a clue on what could be the possible problem?
The application is an Open Source VLSI layout editor named Magic VLSI
tool (an application to design integrated circuits layouts). Version
7.2 is currently under development and the programmer is always working
toward making this tool compatible with as much Unix flavors (including
MacOS X) as possible but develop mainly on linux. The source code for
version 7.2 (if it interest anyone) can be found at
