After checking the OpenOffice bulletin boards, I figured out that if I
remove the
Symbol.ttf font from within OpenOffice's truetype directory, OO will
get the
non-aliased fonts from the X11R6 collection (ie.. from
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts).
This is not a happy solution; these
fonts don't look as nice as others and I am worried about what happens
upon
printing (haven't tried yet). As I recall symbol worked OK in earlier
OO releases.
I wonder why it broke; and why symbol is so special.

p.s. I notice that Arial is NOT one of the fonts represented in
OpenOffice.org1.0.3/share/fonts/truetype . It's also not in the X11
collection.
It is something that is part of MS Office, so my guess would be that
OpenOffice
doesn't know about it.

Ron,
I installed OpenOffice 1.0.3 a few weeks ago. It appeared to be
successful, but I have
numerous fonts which are listed, but the characters show up as boxes
instead of what
they are supposed to be. Symbol is one of them. ArialHB is another. I
haven't looked into
why. I don't understand much about UNIX fonts yet to look into it and
I haven't needed
the missing fonts at this point. But at least you are not alone :~)
Anyone out there have a successful installation of OpenOffice 1.0.3?
I tried
today, and find that I do not have the Symbol font. I followed the
recommended
options of the installer.
