I presume that you are using the Tek emulation in xterm, this isn't
something specific to Apple X11 but standard X11R6 code.

There is a document called "Xterm Control Sequences" somewhere in the
X11R6 docs which lists, well, all the control sequences.  However, all you
need to know is ESC ^C is the sequence to transfer control back to the VT
window.  I have no idea what ?38L is for.
