I think we found the cause, too: If we restart X11 after connecting the

Does anybody know a way around this, and/or if Apple is aware of the
problem?
I saw this problem too with my iBook months ago (I applied a hack to
the BIOS that enables multi-head support for its ATI chipset). Based
on what I learned on this mailing list at the time, this is a known
issue with X11.app 0.3 for OS X. It reads the screen geometry at
startup, and cannot cope with changes in geometry without being
restarted. As far as it is concerned, when you have the external
monitor hooked up, your Powerbook's screen is the full width of both
screens combined, and the height of the Cinema display. When you
disconnect that Cinema display, suddenly 2/3 of the pixels are gone!
There is no workaround at this time - you have to kill X11 before
disconnecting the external display, and then restart it.
What I am not sure of from past discussion on the list is whether the
X11 that will be included in Panther will address this issue.
