With <X -query host> I encounter nearly the same errors as you do Eric
but using Public Beta 3 with OS X 10.2.6

I did not have this problem with Solaris 7, but still I didn't use CDE
because the only advantage I see - having multiple screens - didn't
work eather. At the moment I use X11 and quartz-wm which works more or
less.
The problems I have are:

Subject: XDMCP to Solaris 8 (CDE)
I have a question regarding a problem that I'm having trying to access
the CDE window manager on a stock Solaris 8 on SPARC installation
using Apple's latest (WWDC preview) X11 (1.0).
The mac uses OS X 10.2.6 and the XDMCP protocol is used by typing
X -query xx.xx.xx.xx (where xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP address of the SPARC
machine. You may also insert a :1 after the X if you have the X11.app
running already. This will open up a second X-server.)
With Apple's new X11 (WWDC), one is now able to select a full-screen
X-server instead of the default rootless one which was allowed in
Public Beta's 0.1 to 0.3. So, with this option checked in the X11
preferences and then typing the above command, I am able to
successfully get a full-screen CDE login prompt from the Solaris
machine. However, any attempts to login to the Solaris machine fail.
I have captured some of the log messages in the ~/.dt directory on the
Solaris machine:
in the startlog file in ~/.dt, the Xsession command seems to quit
unexpectedly
...
--- execing /usr/dt/bin/dtsession with a /bin/tcsh non-login shell...
--- starting desktop on /dev/pts/4
/usr/dt/bin/ttsession[8720]: starting
/usr/dt/bin/Xsession[738]: 8703 Hangup
...
and, in the ~/.dt/sessionlogs/(logfile), the following error shows up
...
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 128 (XINERAMA)
Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (XINERAMAGetScreenCount)
Resource id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 123
Current serial number in output stream: 123
Note, I have also tried X +xinerama -query xx.xx.xx.xx to no avail.
Using this method and selecting the "Openwindows desktop login" from
the CDE login screen works OK. However, selecting the "CDE desktop
login" causes the error messages above and the X-server quits and then
re-spawns itself, ending back at the CDE login screen.
Has anyone seen these problems before? And, is there a solution?
Also, besides checking the option box (to select between full-screen
and rootless mode operation) from the Preferences menu of X11.app,
does anyone know if there is a command line flag to the X command
which may be used (similar to startx -- -fullscreen for Xdarwin?)
Thanks for any input!
Eric
Enjoy work. Be happy!
Sven
