Hi all,
First, thanks again to everyone who has continued to write me with
suggestions. Sorry I haven't responded sooner, but I wanted to take the time
to try everything in detail. It turns out I've finally discovered the
solution to my problem, but I'm frankly embarrassed to admit what it was
since its so simple. Yet I figured I owe it to the list to report back what
it was since you were all so kind to reply with so many helpful suggestions.
Today I got someone else to sit down at my iBook and take their shot at
fixing the problem. Well, they fired up X11.app and boom everything worked!
So I sit down, type a command and it doesn't work! We stare at each other
for a few moments in disbelief as we take turns typing the same commands
only for them to work for him and not for me.
After a good laugh, it was time for a reality check. We soon discovered
that I was always hitting the enter key following typing a command, and he
was always hitting return. In fact, in 6 months of owning this iBook I don't
think I've ever hit the return key, just by the way I position my hands on
the keyboard I always hit enter instead. Sure enough, that was the only
difference. The X11.app simply will not respond to a command followed by the
enter key on this iBook. I haven't bothered to try to look into key mappings
to see why the enter key doesn't work -- I've just been content that it
works with the return key.
In reading everyone's suggestions, countless man pages, and numerous
tutorials I've learned many things about X11, shells, etc. But the most
important lesson is the one I've just re-learned -- TRY THE SIMPLEST THING
FIRST!
