Sorry, but I've been searching the archives and haven't yet found a
solution...
The problem: I can't run emacs in its own xterm. It insists on going
into the terminal window. And when it's there it's keyboard only, no
mouse.
The reasons:
1. Apple's own emacs is not X enabled.
2. Fink's emacs will install but also, I gather from the list archives,
not be X-enabled unless you have xfree86. And Fink is not recognising
Apple's X11 as a valid option, the system-xfree86 package seems broken
or old or something. All X dependencies fail (demanding xfree86 or
xfree86-dev) so I can't install any fink X-based packages. Inclusing
alternate editors I wouldn't mind trying.
3. emacs source package staright from the gnu's mouth won't build, it
claims it doesn't recognise the system.
./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... powerpc-apple-darwin7.2.0
configure: error: Emacs hasn't been ported to
`powerpc-apple-darwin7.2.0' systems.
Check `etc/MACHINES' for recognized configuration names.
So, well, does anyone have a solution - or is it "Don't use the apple
versions of X 11 and emacs"??
Thanks for any advice (and no, I won't use vi, I want a mouse, and
python syntax highlighting, and the speedbar,..)
regards
Cath
