Cath,
your point 2 below is not correct. Fink is perfectly happy with Apple's
X11 and - actually - it is what most Fink users use from what I can
read on fink mailing lists.
system-xfree86 is no more required and it is a dummy pkg to support old
dependencies and will disappear in due time.
The simple installation of Apple X11.app is not providing you with a
fully fledged unix environment on OS X . You need to install Dev tools
and the X11SDK package as well. Fink FAQ - I believe - has an entry
concerning all this.
So the situation actually is: "Do (!) use the apple versions of X 11
and emacs". Works perfectly (after you install all the additional
packages from Apple fink will reward you with a happy acknowledgment of
a valid Apple X11 environment)
