To complement this experiment, I've tried the following. (My default
shell is tcsh.) From an existing xterm run:
xterm -e /bin/bash &
In the new xterm type sdahfkjahsdh&
It doesn't die.
To confirm what has been reported, even with a default tcsh, there is
no death if I type fhskhh & in a Terminal window.
