That should only be the case if the X window, was started with a login
shell.
Running as a subshell: (asdfasdf &)
or
tcsh -c asdfasdf &
will cause less problem.
Also the AppleTerminal has different characteristics.

I think you came in late to the discussion. The issue is not finding
an executable. It's the effect on the shell when one isn't found.
With 'tcsh', spinning off an executable as a background task causes
the shell to exit (and take the xterm window with it) if that
executable is not found.

Thanks, this is very helpful. It is interesting though that after
implementing the fix, if you do the test as indicated, one gets a
response indicating
that the shell thought you were trying to exit:
% asdfasdf &
[1] 509
asdfasdf: Command not found.
Use "exit" to leave tcsh.
[1] Exit 1 asdfasdf
%
That is 'sort of' expected, and may point to the actual bug. It's
been a long time since I looked at any of this code, but I have a
vague recollection that this behavior is a tcsh problem that comes
from either how it's configured or how it's built.
Someone who's actually had his hands in the code may be able to
figure this out.
Regards,
Justin
