Ok, I'll have a try. (See below.)

Five seconds is enough if it's going to happen.

Hmm. So I tried copying from a local xterm session (just ran the command
`cat >/dev/null`) and copied some text from the page. Seemed to copy
without any problems.
Copied text from my remote xterm, and the selection cleared itself within
two seconds! The xterm is started with the command
xterm -geometry 80x50 -T 'Saturn' -e ssh -CX saturn
and I'm running pine in the session.
Curiously, if I then copy a second time, the selection sticks.
Ahh: if I then repeat the experiment, first copying from a local xterm and
then copying from a remote xterm, the selection lasts for about five
seconds before spontaneously cancelling itself.
Yes, that seems a reproducible procedure. On the third attempt, the
selection lasted little more than a second.
I've just tried to reproduce the moving windows problem, and I can't
reproduce it at the moment. I'll have to keep a closer eye on how and
when that one happens.
