I have made a whole list of which keys work and which do not

example I can assign uppercase A (meta-shift-A) for a shortcut on
the Mac but not lowercase a (meta-a). I have tried this with the
preferences for X11 input set to Enable key equivalents under X11
and with it off, which has made no difference. I am running 10.3.2,
with X11.app 1.0, developers tools and SDK's installed.
The preference you are supposed to use for this is "Enable key
equivalents". If you have this on many of the meta key combinations
will be reserved. (Basically it is safest just to assume Meta-<any
key> is taken if you have it on.) There have been a number of reports
on this list that even with "Enable key equivalents" off, the Meta
key combos are still caught. This may be a bug in X11.app.
This is an issue with mixing UI's. Both Mac OS X and many X11 apps
have different ideas about what to do with the key combination. The X
server has to decide which paradigm to use at any given time. X11.app
controls this with the "Enable key equivalents" preference. XDarwin
on the other hand always uses Mac OS X key combinations if the cursor
is in the menu bar, but otherwise never uses them. For XFree86 we are
interested in user feedback to see if one of these techniques is
better or if we should consider another way of handling this issue.
