Dear Richard,
I use xmodmap on my powerbook to set the at sign with my German keyboard
correctly. In my .xinitrc I use just one line:
exec /usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 45 = l L at" &
It works just fine. Maybe the "&" is your Problem??
However, I am not an expert, maybe I just landed the lucky punch on this
problem ;-)
