XFree86 4.4.0 has been finalized and pre-built binaries are available
for Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3. This release comes almost exactly one
year after the 4.3.0 release. While it is difficult for a volunteer
group to make firm commitments, the tentative schedule for the 4.5.0
release is August 2004.
Source code and pre-built binaries can be downloaded from
<ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/>. The 4.4.0 documentation
can be read on line at <http://www.xfree86.org/4.4.0/>. Mac OS X
10.2.x users should download the Darwin-ppc-6.x binaries while
Panther users should download Darwin-ppc-7.x. Mac OS X 10.1.x
binaries are planned, but not available at this time. GUI installers
are being prepared and will be posted at the
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/xonx/>.
Following is a summary of new features and bug fixes since XFree86
4.3.0. A summary of differences between XFree86 4.4.0 and Apple's X11
1.0 will follow in a subsequent email.
New Features:
1. The Quartz backends are now loaded dynamically at runtime.
Currently three backends are supported: Fullscreen, Rootless Cocoa,
and Rootless Xplugin. Rootless Xplugin uses libXplugin where
available and gives identical performance to Apple's X11. When
libXplugin is not available (on Jaguar when the X11 beta has not been
installed) Rootless Cocoa will be used instead.
2. With Xplugin, GLX supports accelerated direct rendering.
3. XDarwin is fully compatible with quartz-wm.
4. IPv6 is supported.
5. XDarwin's memory footprint is significantly smaller.
6. The X server starts more quickly.
7. On Panther, X_LOCALE is no longer set but libX11 will support
applications built with X_LOCALE for backwards compatibility.
8. IOKit mode with the Darwin console uses shadowfb and is much faster.
Bug Fixes:
1. XDarwin fully supports Panther.
2. Full screen crash in some screen resolutions has been fixed.
3. You can type in the Preference window when it is in the foreground.
4. The Freetype library is backwards compatible with earlier
versions. (This broke XFree86 4.3.0.)
Enjoy,
Torrey
