Well, I think if you don't have an .xinitrc file, then X11 does a
standard thing by default. There's probably an /etc/xinitrc or
something it looks at.

Rich,
Thankyou!!
It turns out that something changed the permissions on /tmp from 777
to 755. I could not
write to /tmp.
BTW, I don't seem to have a ~/.xinitrc file.

Check your .xinitrc file to make sure the last item does not end in &
or otherwise exit quickly.

I have a question, and hoped you might be able to help me out.
I was looking at darwine from opendarwin, but installing that seems
to have messed up my X11 installation. Since installing it (and
I've duplicated the problem), X11 now launches but
disappears after about 10 - 20 seconds. It used to automatically
launch a xterm window for me as well. Any idea of how to fix this?
I've tried reinstalling X11User.pkg both before and after removing
/etc/X11, /Applications/Utilities/X11.app and
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.x11.plist.
