X11 without apple-GUI?

hello,

is it possible to run a X-server without the apple-GUI but use OSX? i.e.
login to ">console" and there do something like 'xinit' or 'startx'??

i am not very happy with the X11-over-aqua overhead - the XDarwin.app
is pretty slow... so i compiled the latest Xorg release but it seems that
it wants the IOkit calls and cannot start a native X11-server.
