Which parted did you use? The one on the Gentoo install CD's includes
patches for hfs+ support (according to the red box on http://
www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?
part=1&chap=4#doc_chap2), maybe some other versions don't.
