You want to create an ~/.Xresources file. Here is some sample contents
related to xterm from mine:
XTerm*scrollBar: on
XTerm*saveLines: 50000
XTerm*rightScrollBar: true
XTerm*reverseVideo: on
You can do a 'man xterm' to read a list of the resources that you can
modify. Google for Xresources to learn more or better yet do a 'man X' and
search for the RESOURCES section. This explains very well, though it may
be too dense for dipping your toes in the water.
Another member suggested changing an xinitrc or xsession file. There is
no need to do that and modify the options to xterm. The 'right' way to do
it is to change the X resources. If you did modify a startup script,
creating an .Xresources file may not work because your new or modified
startup script may not source the X resources file you just created...
