While I can't address your specific problem, I can suggest an
alternative that might be a work-around.
That is, reverse the order; run xterm locally and ssh within it.
Here's the command I use
xterm -bg lightyellow -title remotehost -e ssh remotehost -l remoteuser &
(And I define aliases to help, as in
alias remotehost '{the above command}'
)
