Well, for one thing, it gets you a second window with a shell
environment inherited from the first, so that any local customization
you've done beyond what's in your login profile doesn't need to be
repeated...
Dunno what the OP's situation is, but I frequently open up multiple
windows to the same remote host by launching xterms from an ssh
session...
