I'm pretty sure that kind of converter only works if the RJ45 is a
serial jack, not an ethernet jack. It just allows more compact cabling,
it doesn't have circuitry to provide a networked serial port (in other
words, it's not a terminal server).
You will need to get a USB serial adapter if you want to use RS-232
communication from your PowerBook. KeySpan offers a wide variety with
OS X support.
