First stupid question: have you tried a different mouse to
see if the same still happens? Just to eliminate the
possibility that the mouse itself is slightly broken and
causing the problems?

At some point in the past, normal X11 copy-paste behavior worked fine for me.
But no longer...
After I try to paste some selected text, my mouse buttons no longer work
correctly (and nothing gets pasted). For example, the left mouse button can
no longer be used to move the window around by click-dragging in the title
bar; sometimes other X11 windows get "chased around" by mouse movements;
can't activate an of the normal three "bubble buttons" in the upper left-hand
corner of the title bar; occasionally, sometime later some selected text will
be pasted into an X11 window, etc. Occasionally, after a series of poking
around with the various buttons, "normal" mouse behavior will return (but
still no copy/paste).
Also am getting similarly odd behavior when using the middle mouse button to
scroll in plain old xterm - the scroll feature seems to get stuck "on".
Mouse is a 3-button Macally optical scrollwheel mouse, no mouse software
installed, no "emulate 3-button mouse" in preferences. Up-to-date Mac OS X
10.3.8...pretty vanilla, actually.
The last time I can remember this working correctly was in Jaguar... :-(
I saw a suspiciously similar-sounding (2003) thread in the archives
involving these folks: Steve Lidie
Cheryl Huntington, and David Mackler, but the thread seemed to have spun out
with no solutions offered...anyone found out anything since then?
Any help would be *greatly* appreciated...
