It is enabled, but depending on when your cron jobs run to update the
locate database and if your computer is off or in sleep mode when the
cron job is supposed to run, then the locate database can get out of
date.

This can be manually gotten around by running the periodic jobs:

 % sudo periodic [daily|weekly|monthly]

Or just the located update:

 % sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb

Mind you, this probably wouldn't matter for relatively constant things
like xcalc, but if you're trying to locate some file that you know you
created in the last week and it's not being found by locate, an old
database is probably the culprit.
