which calc returned nothing, as expected
which xcalc returned /usr/X11R6/bin/xcalc, as before
du -a / | grep -i calc returned every listing with "calc" in the directory name or file name anywhere on the drive
locate calc returned a listing with "calc" in directory or file names but from 4 paths from root instead of the entire drive. It found items that are tantalizingly close.
Thanks for the search suggestions. I have another lead to try and will get back to this list if I find an answer.
Paul

Actually, I believe that locatedb is enabled on OS X by default (am I wrong?)
If so, then you can do it the way I did:
locate calc
