Steve, all,
Not completely related to this topic, but can be useful:
Most of the time, I am running 2 X server on my machine: the default
X11 server, that starts up in 32 bits, and an 8 bits X server, to
serve applications that only work in 8 bits, like Ximtool, or some
epics DM screens. Both servers are the stock X11 apple server. I'm
starting the first one through the dock and the second one from a
terminal:
/Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11 -depth 8 :1
on display :1, to which I direct the remote apps that need an 8 bit
server.
The 2 servers are started in rootless of course (and with quartz-wm),
and co-exist happily.
Just a piece of unsolicited advice...

With any luck you just need to run a normal X11 app on the remote
Linux box and Don's instructions will take care of your problem. I
do this all the time and have never felt the need for the
additional complexity of running two window managers simultaneously
on my Mac or replacing Apple's X11 window manager with another
window manager.
If you really need to have both Apple's X11 window manager running
on your Mac and gnome running on a remote computer and displaying
to your Mac, you could consider using xnest. A google search turned
up the following link:

I haven't tried this on OS X, but our system administrators have
been using xnest for years on our Linux systems to try out new
window managers without having to log out.
You can also replace Apple's window manager with KDE or another
Linux X11 window managers. This is done by modifying the
configuration file that tells Apple's X11 how to start up. A
starting point is:

Life is likely to be a lot simpler if you can ignore this advice.
