w3m.sourceforge.net states:
Inline image support of w3m (w3m-img) This is the extension patch for w3m to
support inline image !
Now, w3m can display inline images on X terminal (xterm, rxvt, etc.) ! Demo:
nec.png, mapion.png 2002/03/11 The patch has already been merged in w3m-0.3.
I am running 0.5, so this should be working... Besides, my sister has w3m and
xterm running and she can view images within it.
the online faq states:
How do I change the default image viewer?
By default w3m uses xv to view images. If you want to change it into, let's
say, 'display', add the following line to ~/.mailcap or /etc/mailcap.
image/*; display %s
You can specify external viewers of other file types as well:
image/*; display %s
application/postscript; ghostview %s
application/x-dvi; xdvi %s
... so I tried changing my mailcap to use add the image/*; display %s...
however, I learned immediately that if I tried using display (imagemagick) to
view jpgs or png files outside of w3m, I received an error:
"display: no decode delegate for this image format"
... so somehow my image viewer does not know mime-types.. ? Does anyone know
what is wrong here?

w3m is an awesome text based web-browser...

Ummm...you answered your own question about w3m not is displaying graphics in
xterm. w3m is *text based* and for that matter so is xterm, and as such it
won't display graphics. However, it should allow you do download the graphic
files.
