I was asking ericb to file a bug report on his other request. The
good news is the original bug is fixed and if everything works
according to plan, it should be in the next Software Update.

Well, Haroon is right once again. I haven't had the chance to
download the update (I'll wait until I get a high-speed connection at
work), but from the details of the 10.4.3 update:
* X11 windows no longer stay in the background after selecting
the X11 application from the Dock or with Application Switcher.
So if you haven't been using the workarounds we discussed earlier, or
if you want to quit using any one of the various patch work solutions,
I suggest you run Software Update ASAP.
