Hello everyone!
All this has been happening since 10.4 came out. I had the following
problems:
- If I had Terminal.app running, sometimes xterm disappear
- If I load X11 from start with no terminal.app running, It appears
around 98% of the time.
- When X11 is going and I start a new xterm, it will appear and
actually 'hang'. The best way to get round this is to start another
xterm and run a kill job or 'xkill'.
- Running a new xterm can kill other xterm you have running on the
screen. This makes X11 an incredibly unstable environment!
Another interesting thing is that if you look at Terminal.app and
load some Terminals, you will see "Process Completed" (Something like
that). Then you load another terminal, it says the standard MOTD and
tty??
None of this occurs in 10.3.x. mind you. It has to be the underlying
code base in 10.4.
I seriously love using OS X because it ties in perfectly in my job. I
managed to put up with all this business being more cautious!

Just another observation. I had this happen today (a disappearing
xterm) and then noticed my computer was very slow. Turned out the
missing xterm was running, without a window, and using abou 70%
CPU!!!!!
Like to know what's going on.

I've never seen the other two problems you mentioned, the
strangely sized or lingering versions. Mine just die prematurely.

I see this also. Additionally sometimes the xterm look like the
original one that launched when X11 was launched and sometime it
is a larger font, has the sidebar and the window is bigger
(probably to accommodate the larger font). Also, sometimes, the
window appears but no prompt and no response. Need to go to
'kill' to get rid of it.

Some of the time, apparently randomly, and without any
explanation in any logfiles that I can find, my xterm windows in
X11 start up and then go away. This has only happened so far
when I'm using the "New" command from the File menu so far,
although I always launch my xterms that way, so it's hard to say
if that's a factor.
I know this has happened to other people on this list; I have
yet to hear a good explanation for what is going on here.
Somebody told me to use a different xterm program; I didn't
like the one they suggested, and it's not too hard to just start
another xterm when one fails, but I'd love to know what's going on.
