What type of network, 10/100, megabit...?
Do you have reasonably smart switches, or ancient 10baseT hubs?
Is the software on a server or on the clients?
If you have NFS mounted servers, it's probably a Good Idea(tm) to
set the options so that they use tcp, not udp for the NFS
connections.
