garbled keyboard in nx client

When I call up a freenx session on my linux box from the mac nx client, the
keyboard is completely garbled. We're not just talking QWERTY vs. AZERTY. Not
even Romulan vs. Klingon. It's far worse -- one key (can't remember which
one) actually churns out a hundred or two lower case L's every time it is
pressed.
When I use the linux nx client to call up a local freenx session the US
keyboard layout works as it should. In other words the problem seems to be
client side.
I'm not sure whether or not this is actually an X11 problem, but since the mac
NX client uses apple X11 in some way I don't quite understand, it might be.
Anyone know what is going on here?
Many thanks
Robert
