I am willing to bet that your path is "limited"
In a terminal window do a echo $PATH <ret>
IF it is very short or nonexistence then you will need to edit your .login
file.
Mine is /sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin
If that does not help try searching the complete disk for either grep or wc
find / -name grep -print <ret>
or
find / -name wc -print <ret>
IF that does not help then I am not sure without more information
Hope this helps
