Hi,
as Jim Watson described in his mail, at least some files are corrupted in
Apple X11 update.
Particularly Vera.ttf.
This file is covered by BitStream font license:
http://www.gnome.org/fonts/#Final_Bitstream_Vera_Fonts
This license contains:
> The Font Software may be modified, altered, or added to, and in
> particular the designs of glyphs or characters in the Fonts may be
> modified and additional glyphs or characters may be added to the
> Fonts, only if the fonts are renamed to names not containing either

So Apple is now violating the license of these fonts. I expect an update to
this *very soon* and it should not matter if Leopard is scheduled to be
released soon!

Currently there is not much of a documentation (and that's an euphemism)"
