command plus whatever you have to type to get a tilde should work,
even if it is awkward. You may also want to try command-1.

Thanks a lot, unfortunately I have the Italian keyboard layout,
so characters as "`" and "~" require combination of keys :-(
But also switching to U.S. layout - now I'm looking for the
apostrophe :-) - doesn't work on my PowerBook.
