I do similarly, except that when you are in dired mode you can use
emac's builtin feature to open in an external program. Certainly in
cvs emacs, if you select, say, a .ppt file in a dired buffer emacs
will spawn powerpoint (presumably via open) to open the file.
Also note that if you're doing this sort of stuff you almost
definately would benefit from gnuclient (which means that if you keep
a running and minimised emacs you get a new frame instead of a new
process, and that means you avoid the emacs startup time).
Note that gnuclient is (ironically) part of XEmacs I marry gnuclient
with GNU Emacs using the code from http://meltin.net/hacks/emacs/
although I'm sure there's a more modern port elsewhere.
