Getting at X11 from my install disks (Imac Intel G5 - Tiger) is a
pain. It's NOT there on the 'install bundled software' - and demands
that you go the frightening path of system re-install. I don't like
even looking at this system in case it decides to wipe my disk for
me. However, that fails because my system has been upgraded and you
just cannot launch the package even for Custom installs.
At one point you could get X11 online from Apple - but that seems to
have been withdrawn from the web site - or I can't find it. I favour
the 'it's been wiped' because I found a link that seemed to offer the
package - but it was broken.
I resorted to using Pacifist on the main install package - which is a
great bit of software - giving you control over what is written onto
your system. The trick is to remember to use the 'Create Receipt'
option so the install system is told that you've loaded X11. I didn't
do this at first, and wondered why Software Update didn't alter my
X11 install recently.

Is there some way (a special keystroke, perhaps), that will allow me

Don't boot from the CD, just put it in your drive and lauch the
Install Bundle Software app, I can't remember its exact name. You'll
then be able to install X11.app.
You don't even need to do that (and actually, it's not Install
Bundled Software, it's something like Optional Installs, I believe.)
In any case, the X11 installer is in /System/Installation/Packages/
X11User.pkg on any Mac OS X 10.4.x installation disc.
Once installed, then run Software Update to ensure that your X11
installation is up to date.
