It's odd that I'm seeing this, yet I see no mention of anyone else having
the same issue.
If I start an xterm in Terminal.app, X11 will start as expected, but oddly,
the xterm will not display until I quit X11.app (by clicking it on the Dock,
then using cmd-q) and it restarts. Once this restart has taken place, the
xterm will open, and other X apps will be able to use the display.
Processes before the restart:
650 ?? S 0:00.01 /usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11
651 ?? R 0:06.38 /usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11 -auth
/Users/mjb/.Xauthority :0
After:
693 ?? S 0:00.01 /usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11
694 ?? S 0:00.21 /usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11 -auth
/Users/mjb/.Xauthority :0
720 ?? S 0:00.03 quartz-wm
Oddly, this behaviour only starts after I connect to a remote linux system
via ssh, which has X forwarding enabled. The connection will cause X11 to
start (of course, since the X forwarding part of ssh wants to connect to the
X server to get auth token details to insert into the remote xauth
database). This made me look at .Xauthority a little closer. Sure enough, if
I remove the local .Xauthority file, and try to start an xterm, X11 starts,
and the xterm is displayed. All is well again, *until* X11 is launched via
and ssh connection, then things go haywire again.
The fix is then to either quit X11, and have it restart while trying to
start an xterm, or to delete .Xauthority and start over. Now, also oddly,
sometimes I get this:
$ xterm
X connection to /tmp/launch-YkJO02/:0 broken (explicit kill or server
shutdown).
During a "oh crap it didn't start, lets kill X11 again" cycle..
(I guess this entire mail is directed at you Ben, but I'd be interested if
anyone else sees anything similar.)
Lastly - Ben, it'd be awesome if the default xinitrc would merge the X
resources in ~/.Xresources if it exists!
Mike.
