*bingo*. After a successful server start, and after it's exited, there's
still a .Xauthority file sticking around. Starting a new X client will read
that file, and get the wrong auth details, if the server writes the file
again.. Maybe. (plucking at straws here) Why it is that the auth query from
an ssh session tends to fail more than a local xterm invocation is another
question.
