Also, make sure you don't have a plain .profile file in your home directory. It may be sourcing that instead of .bash_profile.

Is your MacBook running Tiger or Leopard? That fix is only for Tiger.
For Leopard you can download one of the experimental fixes in
progress mentioned on this list.

If it's Tiger, good. If it's Leopard, don't do that; leave DISPLAY alone.

I haven't encountered that problem on any version of Mac OS X,
Terminal, or iTerm. Assuming you've actually named the .bashrc
properly.. in iTerm, go to Manage->Bookmarks, select Default, and make
sure that the command is something like "login -fp yourusername".
