Nope, straight up clean install of leopard, with the 1.2a6 patch. All I did was download 2.2.11 of gimp and tried to run it. Actually I did change Gimp.app/Contents/Resourses/ and changed the init, script, and openDoc files like Ben described in previous posts... essentially just made it so gimp wouldn't try and start x11 on its own.

when I go into /usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.la it claims I am version 2, but when I use otool as you did below I get the exact thing you get, version 3. Why is that? Is that the problem? Gimp thinks it is 2 as well. Strange.

from libfontconfig.la
# Version information for libfontconfig.
current=2
age=1
revision=0

from otool -L /usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib:
/usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib (compatibility version 3.0.0, current version 3.0.0)

I don't get it?!

Did you go back to a tiger version of X11 and then re-update to the
leopard one or something?

My libfontconfig.1.dylib is version 3.
$ otool -L /usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib
/usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib:
/usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib (compatibility version 3.0.0,
current version 3.0.0)
