Have you tried variations like:
ssh -l remoteusername -f -Y remote.host.name xterm -bg
darkslategray3 -title whatever
(the -bg and -title are obviously optional)

version of SSH running on the Solaris 9 system.
I've got a Solaris 8 system, though it doesn't have ssh installed on it.
Sad that all this was not required in Tiger.
