I realize that the "'Chinese Orange'- and Gray- Walls" of

a thing of the past. It would be nice if Apple could publish, at

a lesser extent SuSE (SuSE/Novell).
I think Apple prefers the "Everything Just Works" way of doing
things. That ... tends to break down when they don't.
Now you've done it, Ben. "Everything Just Works" is great marketing
hype. The only product that I've used that this phrase might describe
is BSD/OS. Mac OS X is approaching the mark but hasn't reached it yet.
It may have reached the "Everything Just Works" status for the average
home and "Windows" users; however, after scanning the archives this
afternoon, it's clear from the comments that this status hasn't been
achieved for the "Unix" user.
Personally, I wouldn't mind paying an additional $50.00 for a
"Professional" edition of Mac OS X that included real documentation
about the underlying Mach Kernel and Core BSD environment.
Had Wind River not made the decision to abandon BSD/OS after acquiring
BSDi, I would still be using a BSD/OS based system. But they did make
that decision and my home system was in dire need of an upgrade.
Apple's choice of components for their systems were similar to what I
would select and a BSD environment was under the bonnet of Mac OS X.
I selected Apple to replace both hardware and software environments.
My primary complaint is with the paucity of adequate Mac OS X
documentation: both the printed variety and the man pages that appear
to be outdated versions of those included in UC Berkeley's last BSD
release.
