But X11 *does* appear in the Dock when it's running, and you can't use
the Applications menu when it's not.  So what's the problem??

If you want to make /Applications/Utilities/X11.app not launch xterm,
just read the "Eliminating the XTerm" thread in the list archives.
Heck, just read the first post!
