Still cannot type into X11 apps

With the latest .10 Xquartz, I still cannot type into X apps.
OpenOffice, nedit).
It looks like I am getting the 8th bit set somehow since I get a lot of
box-drawing characters when I type. It eventually goes away in
OpenOffice after I switch cells in Calc, but does not go away in nedit.

How do I fix this?
