Just a thought... perhaps use Disk Utilities to fix permissions?

I am scared to update now. It took me three weeks to get to the point where most things work... the set back you describe sounds horrible. Hope you are an isolated case, and you can figure it out soon.

Well, I applied 10.5.1 and now I can't get X11 to start at all.

First, I tried to start it the way I started doing it back in Tiger, via
Spotlight (cmd-space x11 enter), but nothing happens, no bouncing icons
on the dock, nothing.

So, I fire up a terminal and try running xterm:

$ xterm
xterm Xt error: Can't open display: xterm: DISPLAY is not set

So, I try and run it straight out of the .app:

16:01:49] [~] lbb $ cd /Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/
[16:02:29] [/Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS] lbb $ ./ X11
command=/usr/X11/bin/xterm
[16:02:31] [/Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS] lbb $ Last login: Thu Nov 15 16:01:42 on ttys001
/usr/X11/bin/xterm Xt error: Can't open display: /usr/X11/bin/ xterm: DISPLAY is not set

?!

Launching from /usr/X11/X11.app, I get two X11 dock icons, then one
icon, then no icons. No X11.

Okay, from the command line:

16:04:14] [/usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS] lbb $ ./X11 X11.app starting:
Xquartz server based on X.org Release 7.2, built on 20071113
Check-in failed: Permission denied
xrdb: Can't open display ''
can't open default display
Quitting XQuartz...

Hrm, a Permission denied error... I guess that's something, but I don't
know what.

In any case, I don't have any X11 right now, and I'm not liking that.
