Thanks Martin. It never occurred to me that -a 16 could be causing problems. I will use -a 8 this coming week at work and see if it helps. The reduced color level doesn't really bother me since the IDEs I use only display basic colors for text anyway. I have also added -z to my rdesktop alias which compresses the rdp stream which also seems to improve the speed of the rdp connection.

What jumps out and wakes old memories from the first X11 on OSX is that
you are running this with 16-bit color. Five years ago, there were
frequent crashes with "thousands of colors", too. If you just set your
display to "thousands of colors" and then run other X11 programs, do
they crash?
I would suspect that 16 bit color is least tested, even less than 8 bit.
