Yes and no. There were always several layouts available for Sun
keyboards. Specifically, there was a "US" and a "Unix" layout.
What you describe is the "Unix" variant.
The "US" and all international variants had Control, Alt and the "Sun"
key to the left of the spacebar, and CapsLock to the left of 'A'.
BTW there's a second "Sun" key, a "Compose" key, and AltGraph to the
right of the spacebar.
Since they are all addressable separately, that gives me eight distinct
modifier keys (when I count Shift_L and Shift_R). Quite enough even
for emacs. :-) Obviously, I much prefer the Sun keyboard to the
Apple layout...
