Ok, I finally got it. Thanks to Jeremy and Harald.
It actually was a problem with launchd.
In a (desperate) attempt to get rid of X11 I removed too many things
(see below). My only concern is: why reinstalling X11User from the
Leopard installation DVD did not fix the problem? I would expect it to
install and configure such files...

This is part of the problem. You should have DISPLAY set
(automatically, not by you). it should look like /tmp/
launch-2hKnRK/:0
I haven't such a thing (/tmp/launch.../:0)
Do you have /System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.x.X11.plist ?
Nope!
At some point did you do 'launchctl unload -w /System/Library/
LaunchAgents/org.x.X11.plist'?
might very well be
Try doing 'launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/
org.x.X11.plist'
done. first I got:
>launchctl: missing the Label key: /System/Library/LaunchAgents/
org.x.X11.plist
>nothing found to load
However, I compared the org.x.X11.plist with the one I have on my
MacBook, and I realized the MB version has 4 entries, while the one I
was using (restored from the trash!) has only 1! in particular, the
"program" string was missing...
I copied the X11.plist from the MB, and this time the "launchctl
load" command has worked.
