X11 on a network?

I had asked to have GIMP installed in our computer
lab for use by our students. We can't afford to buy graphics software and this
is pretty powerful open source software. I was told that the X11 add-on would be
needed and the tech coordinator doesn't want to install it on our server because
we already have a lot on our server (just installed IP phones district-wide) and
doesn't want to risk causing a problem. However, someone told me that even
though X11 uses a client-server model that both could reside on the same machine
and that this is the default setup included on the OSX installation
disk.
I just wanted to verify this. How much disk space
does X11 require?
